Key Rings and Split Rings Made from Spring Steel
Key rings, also known as split rings, are made from spring wire wound into overlapping coils. These overlapping turns form a secure connection for attaching keys, identification tags, labels, pendants and small components.
To attach an item, one end of the ring is lifted slightly and the item is inserted between the coils. It is then moved around the ring until it is fully attached. Once released, the coils spring back together and prevent the item from falling out unintentionally.
Key rings are not only suitable for conventional key bundles. They can also be used for identifying tools, attaching labels, organising sample parts or creating simple removable connections.
Meaning of the Specifications in the Product Table
| Specification | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Outside diameter Da | Maximum outside diameter of the key ring. It determines the required installation space and available capacity. |
| Wire diameter d | Diameter of the spring wire. It influences the strength, opening force and minimum hole or eyelet size required for attachment. |
| Surface finish | The key rings offered have a nickel-plated surface. |
| Material | The standard versions are made from spring steel 1.1200. |
| Total stock | Total quantity currently held in stock. |
| Available immediately | Quantity currently available for immediate dispatch. |
How to Select the Correct Key Ring
The following points should be considered:
-
Outside diameter: The ring must provide sufficient space for all keys, labels or components being attached.
-
Wire diameter: The spring wire must fit through the smallest available hole or eyelet.
-
Opening force: A larger wire diameter normally increases strength but may make the ring more difficult to open.
-
Installation space: The ring must remain free to move and should not become trapped by adjacent components.
-
Operating load: Key rings are intended primarily for holding, identification and organisational purposes.
Material and Surface Finish
Spring steel 1.1200 provides the elasticity required for the overlapping coils. After opening, the turns should return and lie closely together again.
The nickel-plated surface improves appearance and provides basic protection against corrosion and wear. Suitability must be assessed separately for permanently humid, marine or chemically aggressive environments.
Key rings that are damaged, heavily corroded or permanently stretched should be replaced.
Operating Limits
Key rings are not certified lifting, load-securing or fall-protection components. They must not be used for lifting loads or protecting people without a suitable technical assessment.
Specially designed retaining elements should be used for safety-relevant machine connections.
Further retaining and holding solutions can be found in our spring elements overview.
Frequently Asked Questions About Key Rings
How do I select the correct size?
The required outside diameter and wire diameter are decisive. The wire must fit through the smallest hole or eyelet.
Can key rings be opened repeatedly?
Yes. However, frequent or excessive opening may reduce the spring action.
Are key rings suitable for high loads?
No. Without a verified load rating, they should only be used for light retaining and connecting tasks.
